How deep should a 6 foot fence post be? ›

The general rule of thumb when setting a post is that the depth of the post's hole needs to be one-third to one-half of the actual above-ground height of the post. So, a six-foot-high finished post ideally needs to be buried three feet into the ground.

If you're setting wooden or concrete posts in concrete you'll need 8ft (2.4m) posts for a 6ft (1.828m) fence – i.e. your posts are 2ft (0.6m) longer than the fence height. Use 4in x 4in posts for fences of 5ft and over and 3in x 3in posts for anything under 5ft.

For example, if your vertical short fence will be 100 lineal feet long and your boards are 6 inches wide with no gaps, this means that you'll need two boards per foot = 200 boards. Examine the length of each plank in relation to the height of your fence.

Each lap timber fencing panel is 6ft x 6ft, which converts to 1.83m x 1.83m.

Should fence posts be 6 or 8 feet apart? ›

For most residential fences 8′ between posts is the maximum. Commercial fences (industrial chain link, for example) typically can handle up to 10′ spacing because of their stronger frames. All things being equal, the closer the posts are together the better it is for the fence.

We have 6 foot panels in 5 foot posts - looks a bit strange, but it's fine. You just have to use the more robust fence panels with vertical planks rather than the cheaper ones with horizontal planks.

PVC fencing. The cheapest way to create a fence for your home is by getting one made from PVC. Such fences substitute wooden pickets and stakes to offer your protection from the outside world.
